On 2 July, the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI, Sweden) signed a strategic memorandum of cooperation. The document was signed by Andriy Teliupa, Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine, and Mons Nilsson, Executive Director of SEI, with the participation of a representative of the Green Transition Office of the Ministry of Economy.

“The signing of the memorandum with SEI is a strategic step for Ukraine on its way to modernising its economy. We aim not only to rebuild the country, but also to make it more sustainable, efficient and focused on European climate goals. Access to SEI’s expertise and analytics will allow us to develop state-of-the-art solutions that will help attract green investments, integrate innovative approaches and strengthen Ukraine’s contribution to Europe’s joint climate efforts. This partnership will become a catalyst for long-term sustainable development and open up new opportunities for business and the state”, said Andriy Teliupa, Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine.

The Memorandum, signed for three years as part of the implementation of the National Energy and Climate Plan until 2030, defines the key areas of cooperation between the Ministry of Economy and SEI.

The document provides for:

  • conducting joint research and analytics to decarbonise the economy
  • modelling reform scenarios for different sectors
  • developing and implementing joint projects in the field of green transformation
  • engaging SEI’s technical support and expertise
  • sharing data and organising training events
  • promoting investment to support reforms and development of key industries.

“Ukraine has demonstrated exceptional determination in its commitment to green transformation, even in the face of military action. Our cooperation will allow us to combine Swedish experience in sustainable development with Ukrainian ambitions to build a greener economy. This partnership is of strategic importance not only for Ukraine, but also for the whole of Europe in the context of achieving climate goals”, said Mons Nilsson, SEI Executive Director.

The Green Transition Office will implement the agreements, in particular, together with the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, it will support green transformation, promote the development of joint projects to implement green transformation, climate and energy reforms in Ukraine as part of the implementation of the National Energy and Climate Plan.

“This memorandum will become a platform for implementing ambitious projects that will help Ukraine become a regional leader in sustainable development”, commented Andriy Kitura, Head of the Green Transition Office and DiXi’s Director of Development.

The signing of the memorandum is part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to build international partnerships in the field of green transformation. The results of cooperation with SEI are expected to make an important contribution to the European integration process and help Ukraine achieve the ambitious goals of the National Energy and Climate Plan until 2030.
