Ukraine can contribute to global energy security with the support of partners – Olena Pavlenko

On 31 October, representatives of Italy and the United States held a bilateral dialogue on ‘Opportunities and Challenges for Italy-U.S. Cooperation in Energy and Circularity’, organised by the Italian Committee of the World Energy Council at the Italian Embassy in Washington, DC. The meeting was also attended by DiXi Group President Olena Pavlenko, who spoke at a panel session on Ukraine.

The delegation of Italian experts and leading industry representatives, together with representatives of American institutions, think tanks and stakeholders, discussed the possibilities of transatlantic cooperation for a just energy transition in the context of global challenges. The event featured a discussion on the contribution of industry, the outlook for US energy policy, and the role of renewable energy communities in enhancing the security and resilience of energy systems. The participants placed special emphasis on the Ukrainian context.

“A very professional and honest discussion about the future of the energy sector and how US-Italian cooperation can address new global threats. At a separate panel on Ukraine, we had the opportunity to discuss how our country can contribute to global energy security and how international partners can help us,’ said Olena Pavlenko, President of DiXi Group, commenting on the event.

In particular, DiXi Group President presented the main components, goals and objectives of the recently adopted National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), and spoke about the reforms envisaged by the document. The main climate goals of the NECP are to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65% compared to 1990 levels, reduce methane emissions by 30% compared to 2020, and achieve a 27% share of renewable energy sources in total energy consumption.

The reforms envisaged by the document include increasing energy efficiency in construction, reducing methane emissions, developing distributed generation, creating new interconnectors, creating smart grids, developing highly efficient cogeneration, maintaining balancing capacities, etc.

The expert also introduced the participants to the potential of green investment projects in Ukraine based on the analysis conducted by the Green Transition Office, an independent advisory body established by DiXi Group to support the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine and other stakeholders.

“A total of 640 investment projects were analysed, of which about 260 were identified as green. More than half of them relate to the energy sector,” says the study, the results of which were presented by Olena Pavlenko at this event. Among them are also projects in the fields of transport, agriculture, industry, IT, defence technology, mining, etc. Energy projects relate to renewable energy, hydro and wind power, bioenergy, and grid development.

The discussion was part of a series of events organised by the Italian Committee of the World Energy Council on the dialogue on the energy transition between Italy and the United States.

Participation in the event was supported by the International Renaissance Foundation within the framework of the project ‘Supporting the Decarbonisation of Ukraine’s Economy through the Development of New Debt Financing Models. Stage 3’.
