The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has recently adopted the Law of Ukraine “On Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine Regarding the Implementation of European Union Law on Energy Market Integration, Enhancement of Security of Supply, and Promotion of Competitiveness in the Energy Sector” (the “Market Coupling Law”). This legislation transposes nine acts of the EU energy acquis (the so-called Electricity Integration Package) and establishes the legal framework for coupling Ukraine’s electricity market with that of the European Union.
With adopting the law Ukraine has taken an important step toward energy integration with the European Union. This is a significant development — not only for Ukraine’s energy sector, but for regional energy security and the broader EU–Ukraine integration agenda.
