Ukraine spent more on electricity imports in 2024 than in the previous 5 years
According to the data published on the Energy Map portal, the cost of electricity imports in 2024 amounted to a record $669.4 million, which is $2 million more than the total cost of the previous five years.
The change in costs was caused not only by an increase in imports but also by electricity price dynamics. Thus, in 2024, Ukraine imported 4436.6 GWh, spending $669.4 million. For comparison, in 2023, import volumes were five times lower (806.4 GWh), while costs were four times lower ($154.7 million). In pre-war 2021, 1693.8 GWh were purchased from abroad for $87.3 million, a three-times lower volume and eight-times lower costs.
Electricity export revenues continued to fall, dropping to $81 million, 8 times less than the amount spent on imports. This is the third year in a row that Ukraine has been reducing its electricity export revenues while considerably increasing a negative trade balance due to the full-scale war and Russia’s destruction of Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
