Ukraine received awards from the Chair of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) for defending democratic values and democracy worldwide, as well as for continuing the implementation of the EITI Standard despite the war. The award ceremony took place during the EITI Global Conference held on June 12–14 in Dakar, Senegal.

During the award presentation, EITI Chair Helen Clark emphasized:
“Ukraine has been one of the leaders in EITI implementation, and despite the war, the process of implementing the Initiative continues in full: the multi-stakeholder group is functioning, and the EITI Report is under preparation. This inspires many countries at both the regional and global levels. I would like to thank the Ukrainian team for their dedication and efforts in this area.”

A separate EITI award was presented to Oleksii Orlovskyi, Director of the Democracy and Good Governance Program at the International Renaissance Foundation, who has been working on EITI implementation since 2007, served as an EITI Board member from 2016 to 2023, and chaired the Governance and Oversight Committee over the past five years.

Upon receiving the award, Oleksii Orlovskyi noted that Ukraine has always been among the top EITI member countries and expressed his hope that “the next EITI Global Conference, in three years’ time, will take place in a free, democratic, and peaceful Ukraine.”

Receiving the award on behalf of the Ukrainian team as Deputy Chair of Ukraine’s Multi-Stakeholder Group implementing the EITI, Olena Pavlenko, President of the DiXi Group think tank, stated that the award belongs to all Ukrainians who are fighting for the same democratic values upheld by the EITI—transparency, accountability, and multi-stakeholder dialogue. She also called on all countries implementing the EITI Standard to continue supporting Ukraine in its struggle to win the war.

Background: Ukraine joined the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative in 2013 and has since fully integrated the EITI Standard into its national legislation. A multi-stakeholder group operates under the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, and EITI Reports covering all minerals of national importance are regularly published.
