The EU has to check the expansion of Nord Stream

According to the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine, in January-August 2015 gas consumption decreased by 20.2% – to 21.848 billion cubic metres as compared to the same period in 2014. However, next year the decline in gas consumption will be limited. This is an opinion of Liubomyr Kokovskyi, an expert of Dixi Group Think Tank.

“The reduction of gas consumption in Ukraine is primarily due to the decrease of business activity in the country. According to the preliminary estimates, GDP for the period fell by 15%. Obviously, gas consumption cannot increase in such conditions. Therefore, it can be called a dubious achievement. Next year the economic growth of Ukraine is expected to be within 2-3% of GDP growth, which will require additional energy. Even under an optimistic scenario of introducing energy efficiency measures, it will be difficult to compensate thereby for the increasing demand on the part of enterprises. However, the process will certainly depend on a number of other factors, such as weather conditions, the situation in the coal and electricity markets, the speed of reforms in the industry, etc.”

“The decision to supply gas to the uncontrolled territories of Donbas region during the heating season will be an important factor affecting the volume of gas consumption”, said the expert.
