Weekly analytical report 29 April – 5 May, 2020

In this issue:

– The first decision of the government as part of ‘anti-crisis package’ was the revised forecasted electricity balance, which reflected the actual state of affairs in the market…

– Due to low demand and the growing share of renewables in the forecasted balance, the so-called “green-coal paradox” is fully manifesting itself; consequently, the production of nuclear power plants will be reduced

– Poland clinched a convincing victory over the Russian gas giant: the Polish government may seek the seizure of Gazprom assets, and Gazprom agreed to decrease the gas price for Poland

– Payments from Gazprom ensured the current financial stability of Naftogaz, but market situation limits the opportunities to invest in development

– Despite the crisis, discussions of how to improve European integration mechanisms in the energy sector continue in Ukraine
